Omega-3s (EPA + DHA) promote ocular health by:
  • Protecting eyes from age-related and oxidative damage
  • Supporting the production of natural anti-inflammatory molecules
  • Maintaining fluid and flexible ocular membranes
  • Supporting healthy tissue moisture and tear production

Fish oil has been proven to help protect and promote healthy eyes.

For more information on importance of Omega-3s, visit the American Optometric Association's site.

Four Fantastic Foods to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

  • Kale. Leafy green vegetables, like kale, are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, two nutrients found in the healthy eye that are believed to lower your rist for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.
  • Salmon. Some studies suggest that diets rich in omega-3 fatty acid from cold-water  fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and halibut reduce the risk of developing eye disease later in life.
  • Oranges. Oranges and all of their citrus cousins - grapefruit, tangerines, and lemons - are high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that is critical to eye health.
  • Black-eyed peas. Legumes of all kinds, including black-eyed peas, kidney beans, lima beans, and peanuts contain zinc, an essential trace mineral that is found in high concentration in the eyes.

Fun Facts

VSP's Fun Facts

Vision Source's Crazy Facts

  • Seeing is such a big part of everyday life that it requires about half of the brain to get involved.
  • Newborns don’t produce tears. They make crying sounds, but the tears don’t start flowing until they are about 4-13 weeks old.
  • The cells in your eye come in different shapes. Rod-shaped cells allow you to see shapes, and cone-shaped cells allow you to see color.
  • Some people are born with two differently colored eyes. This condition is heterochromia.
  • Even if no one in the past few generations of your family had blue or green eyes, these recessive traits can still appear in later generations.
  • Each of your eyes has a small blind spot in the back of the retina where the optic nerve attaches. You don’t notice the hole in your vision because your eyes work together to fill in each other’s blind spot.

  • Babies are born color blind. Their color perception develops gradually, usually reaching a full ability to recognize and distinguish colors at about 5 months.
  • Our irises have over 256 unique characteristics. Compare that to fingerprints, which only have about 40. This is why many new security measures have iris scans instead of fingerprint scans.
  • Why did pirates wear eye patches? It was actually a trick to help them see better. The eye with the patch was used to see in the dark below deck, while the uncovered eye was used for bright light above deck.
  • Shark corneas are amazingly similar to humans’. They’re close enough that shark corneas have been used for human transplant surgery.
